Cabling

The supply of power and image data LED display components comprising media facades presents a particular challenge. Due to the distribution of pixels on large architectural surfaces, very long cable runs are required. The complete length of cabling in a building facade can be as much as several hundreds of kilometres and it is essential to minimise this using computer networking techniques and to ensure that future maintenance does not require building works in order to remedy problems with media facade components. Moreover, environmental protection and minimisation of the number of penetrations in the facade structure are essential.

Safe and easy installation
Recent developments in combined power and data cabling are essential to media facade cable management, as is use of low voltage power supply in order to simplify installation and maintenance and to optimise lifetime and cost. Cable connector technology is crucial as well, since the very large numbers of cables comprising a complete facade give rise to equal numbers of potential points of failure in interconnect.

Maintenance
Where possible, combination of media facade power and data distribution with building cabling systems is essential to improve maintenance and cost of ownership over the lifetime of the building. In particular the design of display system cabling to allow the remote connection of power and computer systems in easily accessible control spaces greatly increases maintainability.
